To be honest, most people in the world have a love-hate relationship with politics and its periphery. Politics works (almost) for everything: the education system, medical reason, professional business career, and, of course, political movement. Does it work on social and charity movement? In my opinion: yes. Politics also engage to every single individual, including you all readers, because you have rights and tasks to do and I assume every single person have different ways to solve their problems. When you are on your way to resolve those challenges, you start doing your decision, rights, and politics to achieve what you want to.
Politics works in many ways of life, and I consider communication is one of the most powerful yet effortless politics to do.
No, I do not discredit anyone else who works for an advertising agency. I do assume it as an effortless because of one thing: it’s accessible to people who enjoy it and easier for them who creative and have a good control on emotional quotient.
Before I went to Rotterdam, many relatives told me that the most comfortable part of living abroad is you can have full access to your rights. The different perspective is not coming from various morning view or coffee spot, but it’s coming from the way people treat another people. I copy from one of my friend’s facebook page:
You smoke? Cool. You do not smoke? Okay.
You drink? Cool. You do not drink? Let’s grab a coffee, then.
Are you not virgin? Cool. Are you virgin? Great!
You wear short skirts, crop tee, dye your hair green? Cool. You dress casually? Nevermind.
Do you kiss your date in a public? So what. You do not kiss them? Not my business.
You just got your tattoo? Well done. You hate tattoo? No problem.
You Muslim? Cool. You not Muslim? Okay.
However, excluding that last one above, we also can feel the freedom from the behaviour of people when they go for groceries, pack stuff for moving out from the apartment, even pump bicycle tire. They do not make any comments because, perhaps, most of them are have a good emotional quotient while keep pushing themselves to be better individuals in diversity world. This is plausible reason to back up why they having excellent communication skills regarding judging universal persons.
Furthermore, these do not mean that people are too individual or do not like making friends because they will help you if you ask them as long as if you can communicate it well. Communicate? Yes, and it is part of a pure political action to solve your problem as I have said before: Ally.
Then how if you want to do politics without great skills in communication? Oh, let me change it: “How if you do not have excellent working skills but want to communicate?”. I have no basic skills regarding grading people of their political skills, but as a human being which has right to vote and do the election, I have sense, and it keeps telling me that communication and politics should always together no matter what it takes.
According to the principle of management skills, which on of its advantage is “using another person to solve the problem”, you have to deliver all the information as perfect as you have. One simple missing link leads to false interpretation. It seems similar to translating the output from econometrics model: right numbers, high-quality output, perfect equation, but wrong words may overcome a disastrous perception and policy.
Lately, Indonesian bumped into a hot new issue about communication. One of the problem rising when a word from Governor of Jakarta, when explaining one of his programme to people of Pulau Seribu, interpreted wrongly. Many people, probably most of them are Muslims, furious about the word that ‘sounds’ discrediting the Holy Al-Qur’an. Many people start to search the related video and look the ‘prestigious’ thirty-one seconds before the person himself ask all netizen to watch it in full version, which I assume to get a deeper and more understanding of what did he mean by using his words.
I do not want to make any conclusion about it because every people have a different perspective about their faith, especially about religion.
What has been clear about this political religion conflict is are communication and interpretation. To deliver the message, you have to gain positivity from the receivers, because, without it, you may be stuck for a long time in explaining something that they do not want to hear.
Stephen R. Covey describes one of seven effective habits for people with a great sentence: Begin with the end in mind. With this, he believes that people will be able to set up everything effectively to achieve what they want to.
Unfortunately, if we only use one instead of seven, we will be on the wrong way because we left out the process which including communication.
Again, people always stuck in a love-hate relationship with politics, but let’s keep dreaming and fighting while believing that the great dream will come through because once Napoleon Bonaparte said the world is suffering a lot because of the silence of great individuals. This statement was also hardening by the first president of Indonesia, Soekarno, with his statement that it is better to have ten youngsters than anyone else because these ten he may lead the whole country to gain respects all over the world.
My summary: never jump into politics without a good communication skill. Never.
